The Key Laboratory of Performance Evolution and Control for Engineering Structures (Tongji University) of the Ministry of Education was established in 2017 by Tongji University from two laboratories of the Department of Structural Engineering, and was included in the development plan of key laboratories of the Ministry of Education in September 2018.

Relying on the world-class discipline of civil engineering of Tongji University and the class I peak discipline of Shanghai, the laboratory is committed to the research of evolution law and control technology on the scale of structural performance, the core of which is the mechanism of action of load and environment factors. The goal is to predict structural performance and achieve long-life safe service of the engineering structures, to achieve scientific research results with social impact in the design and maintenance of the whole life of the engineering structures, and to escort the smooth progress of the national development strategy.

Based on the understanding of the research status and development trend of related fields, the laboratory sets up four main research directions around three key scientific issues: "mechanism of action of load and environment", "law of performance evolution of engineering structure" and "performance control of engineering structure". The four research directions include the evolution mechanism of engineering structure performance under load, the evolution mechanism of engineering structure performance under environmental action, the performance perception of engineering structures, and the performance control of engineering structures.
